The BA in Social Sciences (BASS) in Karampura Campus has been conceived as an innovative programme offered. The Programme has been envisioned as the site where there is a possibility for a critical blending of a range of social sciences disciplines, particularly Sociology, Political Science and History.
The BASS programme imbibes the dynamism of the interdisciplinary orientation and seeks to introduce the same to students through the combinations of discipline and inter-disciplinary courses drawn from the other BA programmes of the University. The rationale for the programme has also been to cater to those students who might be more interested in joining an interdisciplinary programme with the scope of earning a ‘minor’ in one of the three social science disciplines mentioned above.
Students registering in this program will get to share pedagogical space with the students of the other BA programmes in the campus through collaborative teaching involving the General Electives (GE), Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC and AEO), Skill Enhancement courses (SEC), Value-Based Education (VBE) and Community Engagement and Service (CES) courses.
Students of BASS aiming to pursue MA programmes at AUD and other institutions or seeking employment opportunities after the completion of their degree, will be accordingly equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to compete in the charted fields.
BA in Social Sciences (3 + 1 Year)
In the first 3 years the credit load is as follows:
- Discipline specific core (DSC) within Social Sciences = 13 courses divided between three domain areas of “Foundations of SS”, “Perspectives and methods of SS” and “Substantive areas of enquiry in SS” 13 x 4 credits = 52 credits.
- Discipline specific elective (DSE) = 2 courses drawn from any of the three domain areas of “Foundations of SS”, “Perspectives and methods of SS” and “Substantive areas of enquiry in SS” 2 x 4 credits = 8 credits
- Minor Discipline Courses (MDC) Six from any one of the discipline areas of Sociology, Political Science and History, 6 X 4 credits = 24 Credits
Students who wish to earn a “Minor” must successfully complete six courses from one of these three baskets in the first three years. For others students who do not wish to opt for a minor may do the requisite number of GE courses drawn from across the three minor baskets (Sociology, Political Science or History) or any other GE courses.
- Generic elective (GE) = 1 x 4 credits = 4 credits
- Ability enhancement compulsory (AEC) = 3 x 4 credits = 12 credits
- Ability enhancement optional (AEO) = 2 x 4 credits = 8 credits
- Skills enhancement (SE) = 2. 2 x 4 credits = 8 credits
- Community Engagement and Service (CES) 1 X 4 credits = 4 credits
- Value Based Education Course (VBE) 1 X 4 credits = 4 credits (At the time of exit)
- Internship (6 credits) (At the time of exit)
There are specific exit options after each year, with the student receiving an Undergraduate Certificate if they exit after one year, an Undergraduate Diploma after two years, BA Degree after three, and a BA Honours or BA Research degree after completing four years. At each exit point, an internship of 6 credits and a VBE course has to be completed to receive the particular certification.
The School of Global Affairs offers students the following minors. Students who wish to get a minor must successfully complete six courses in their chosen minor discipline in the first three years:
- Political Science
- Sociology
- History
For the students who continue to the fourth year, the first three years of the degree are the same. In the fourth year there is a credit load of 42 credits that includes a 6 credit Research Project Report / Seminar. In the fourth year there will be a provision to opt for Research track or Honours track.
The BA SS with Research requires students to choose 4 DSEs in the fourth year, which may include courses on Research Design, Data collection, and/or Research Internship
BA SS Degree Honours students have to complete a seminar paper in the discipline, and take at least one DSE in the fourth year. Note that the GE in the fourth year may include DSE courses offered by the programme.
