PhD in Heritage Studies
Heritage Studies; is an umbrella term encompassing interconnected disciplines like archaeology, art, architecture, conservation and preservation, museum studies and heritage tourism.
The PhD programme in Heritage Studies will sync with the broader vision of National Education Policy 2020. NITI AYOG, in its 2020 report on ;Improving Heritage Management in India, proposed an all-encompassing inclusive multisectoral and multidisciplinary approach involving the entire gamut of heritage stakeholders from the myriad custodians and a range of heritage experts and professionals interested in generating knowledge database, new technologies, developing site museums, facilitating revenue generation models through tourism and liaising with all the essential institutions in heritage management in India. The interdisciplinary PhD in Heritage Studies seeks to undertake themes in archaeology, art and architecture, world heritage and civilization, Conservation, museology, heritage tourism management and marketing, cultural heritage and tradition, Indian knowledge system, built and natural heritage structures, forms, materials, heritage landscapes and environments immersed in fieldwork combined with the latest scientific research methodology and technology. These broad areas align with the programmatic scheme connected to the two master programmes currently offered in the School—Archaeology and Heritage Management and Conservation, Preservation and Heritage Management. Students can take the NET examination in archaeology, Museum and conservation, ancient history, tourism administration, and management.
To encourage research scholarship in heritage studies by focusing on archaeological sites and monuments, Ethnoarchaeology, Historical Archaeology, field archaeology, Harappan archaeology, Popular/People s Archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics with interdisciplinary approaches
- To undertake interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary heritage studies in conservation and preservation of material conservation in organic and inorganic materials, conservation of museum artefacts, metal and stone objects, paper, bone, pottery, sculptures, archaeological artefacts, manuscripts, paintings, and textiles. Contemporary techniques and updated conservation laboratories support protecting and preserving heritage structures, buildings, materials, forms, and designs.
- To undertake and develop Research in Museology, Archival Studies, site museum management, manuscripts, and oral traditions to develop an appreciation of heritage resources, their documentation and interpretations, theories, practices and methods in heritage studies
- To undertake Research in heritage tourism, marketing and management studies, civilizational interaction and Diaspora studies, visitor and site management, organizations and agencies roles, and Heritage and cultural entrepreneurship development.
- To cultivate and produce knowledge in alignment with UNESCO World Heritage sites, national and international antiquarian conventions, laws, policies and regulations, plural living traditions, tangible and intangible manifestations in its natural habitat and environments related to heritage management and Fundamental Duties of the Indian Constitution2
- To facilitate interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary mapping and linking of cultural and natural heritage sites, the role and usage of technology in heritage management, disaster management of heritage sites, monuments, historic Urban conservation, heritage towns and town planning.
- To promote the development of adequate outreach and capacity-building measures by enhancing the participation of the communities to increase their involvement and support towards heritage protection and preservation and public awareness about heritage-related subjects.
