The programme is framed around the study of concepts such as Historical Sense, Distinction between History and Myth, Evolution of Society from Ancient to Medieval to Modern and Contemporary, Framing of World Politics and Economy, Colonisation and Decolonisation, War and Revolution. It is designed to stimulate students’ interest in India’s varied pasts in relation to wider global trends. It aims to introduce students to different ways of accessing the past that makes the study of history exciting and rewarding. It focuses on five important areas that are: Indian history, World history, Delhi as an area of study, Methodology of History, and a wide range of themes drawn from Indian and World history such as race, caste, wars, revolution, decolonisation, art, architecture, etc. It aims to inculcate in its students the desire to interrogate and analyze, ‘how do we know what we know’. Along with studying chronology, events and personalities, the programme lays emphasis on the study of long term processes in history. Various courses taught in the B.A History programme introduce students to sources like archaeological pieces of evidence, inscriptions, coins, maps, historical biographies and autobiographies, paintings, historical monuments, etc. and their role in history-writing.

The programme addresses the historical component of the study of social sciences and humanities. Its thematic courses have linkages with themes offered in other SUS programmes. Its multidisciplinary approach resonates with other courses offered in the school. Several courses are designed to appeal to the students of non-history background as well.
