Dear All,
School of Liberal Studies is organising a seminar by Dr Anamitra Roychowdhury, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi on the topic"Employment trends in post-reform India: With special reference to the Periodic Labour Force Survey data" as part of Special Lecture Series in Economics.
Dr. Anamitra Roychowdhury Assistant Professor Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi
Abstract: Examining employment trends between 1983-84 and 2017-18 – this paper finds an inverse relationship between output and employment growth in India. A major contribution of the paper is to challenge a dominant hypothesis in literature, namely, voluntary withdrawal of Rural Female from the labour force between 2004-05 and 2011-12. Documenting negative employment growth between 2011-12 and 2017-18, this paper identifies the exact segments of workforce responsible for employment contraction; its sectoral distribution and conditions of employment according to the PLFS data. Explanation for the soaring open unemployment rates, observed across the board, is also provided.
