Public Health is an interdisciplinary field drawing its core strength from medicine, biological sciences, social sciences, management, and public policy and planning. It is an applied field bringing public health theory and practice together, theory informing the practice and vice-versa. In spite of a strong affiliation with medicine and medical care, public health as a field maintains a strong distinction from the former in terms of its strong population level focus both in terms of problems as well as solutions. With a population focus, the idea of equity is the most important governing principle of the public health field and in any public health intervention. With a population focus and equity as the guiding principle, the role of state and understanding its relationship with its citizens becomes paramount. Our recent experience of the Pandemic clearly underlined the importance of a global perspective in public health on many grounds. Yet, it also more powerfully underlined the important role played by the state and society, compelling us to be grounded in our own immediate social and public health realities
The PhD program in public health will recognize these aspects of public health as the guiding ideas of the program. Accordingly, the Program aims to orient young social science and public health scholars towards the public health realities of the country and the region and to provide an enabling academic environment for these scholars to work in areas of importance to the region. The program will help to build a research environment in the school that will connect the School’s public health program with institutions of public health practice and empirical field in the country and outside.
Public Health academic programs usually get positioned as medicine-centric, management-centric or social sciences-centric, depending on the nature of the Institution where a program is located. AUD being a social science university, aim here is to have a public health research program with a strong social science focus. Equity and social justice will be the core values of this programme.
