Course Description:

This course is designed to cultivate an inquiry stance among student-teachers, encouraging them to adopt a critical, reflective approach to their teaching practice. By engaging in structured guided inquiry, student-teachers learn to identify questions and problems that emerge in school/classroom context, investigate these, and derive actionable insights to enhance their practice. This reflective process helps them to critically assess their teaching approaches, understand the impact of their strategies on students and learning, and make informed changes. The course aims to develop an orientation for continuous professional growth through self-directed and autonomous inquiry, encouraging future teachers to refine their practices based on evidence, experience and reflective thinking. This emphasis on reflection also equips them with the skills to engage with the dynamic educational environments.

Course Objectives:

  • Generating interest in/promoting a culture of critical inquiry in and reflection on professional practice
  • Introducing research process and its relationship with practice
  • Developing skills for designing and implementing a research project
  • Appreciating the sharing of knowledge within the community of practice.

Course Outcomes:

After the completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Identify contextual problems and formulate appropriate research design,
  • Prepare the plan of action for undertaking school-based research,
  • Develop and use tools and techniques for the collection of relevant data,
  • Collect and analyze the data to identify the causes,
  • Develop and implement need-based interventions for addressing the problems,
  • Study the effectiveness of the intervention(s),
  • Reflect and share school-based research experiences through reports and presentations.

Brief description of the modules:

Module 1: Concept and tools for research

This module will discuss the concept and importance of research in general and practitioner research in particular. It will focus on action research and case study of learners specifically. The steps of conducting action research will be discussed.

Module 2: Identification of inquiry problem

This module will involve identification of a question, problem or theme for inquiry drawn from the day-to-day teaching-learning process of the school to which the student is assigned (guided by a mentor). The areas could be drawn from foundation courses, disciplinary courses, school observations and other experiences.

Module 3: Development of an action project

This module will involve development of a brief action project outlining how the project will be executed (guided by a mentor). The project could be school-based research that involves outlining research questions, method, data collection tools, analysis, and ethical considerations. Or it could be an intervention/action designed to solve a particular problem in a classroom setting.

Module 4: Execution of the project

The student-teachers will execute the project with mentorship from the faculty mentor. The faculty supervisor/teacher coordinator at the school-site would also observe the execution of the project and provide feedback.

Module 5: Presentation and report

The project will culminate into a brief presentation and report. With the support of the mentor, the student-teachers will develop a brief report based on a format provided to them. The report will be presented in a seminar.
