Course Description: This course seeks to orient student teachers to the Constitution of India with a particular emphasis on Fundamental Rights and Fundamental Duties, and to prepare them for their roles and responsibilities as responsible, productive, and effective citizens of India. The course also seeks to enable student teachers to understand the interconnected and interdependent world, India’s rich heritage and philosophical foundation of “Vasudaiva Kutumbakam” (Whole world is one family), acquire the knowledge, capacities, values, and dispositions needed to understand global issues and become active promoters of more peaceful, harmonious and sustainable societies. The course also seeks to create among student teachers an awareness of responsible global citizenship required for responding to contemporary global challenges. The sustainability aspect of the course seeks to develop among student teachers an understanding of the idea of ‘Sustainability’ in all fields of human activities, including achieving sustainable development in its three dimensions – economic, social, and environmental – in a balanced manner. The environmental education component of the course aims at creating an awareness among student teachers of environmental issues, including actions required for mitigating the effects of climate change, environmental degradation and pollution, and initiatives required for effective waste management, conservation of biological diversity, management of biological/natural resources, forest and wildlife conservation, and sustainable development and living. The course will also deepen the knowledge and understanding of India’s environment in its totality, their interactive processes, and effects on the future quality of people’s lives.
Course Objectives:
- To comprehend the concept of citizenship and citizenship education,
- To Explain the idea and practice of ‘Sustainability’ in all fields of human activities
- To understand and analyze the Sustainable Development Goals with reference to education.
- To create awareness of environmental issues and its impact on human civilization
Course Outcomes:
- Explain the concept of citizenship and citizenship education,

- Explain the concept and aims of Global Citizenship and Global Citizenship Education,
- Describe the aims of and approaches to global citizenship education,
- Explain the concept of ‘Sustainability’ in all fields of human activities, and approaches to achieving sustainable development in its three dimensions – economic, social and environmental – in a balanced manner,

Brief description of the modules:
Module-I: Citizenship Education
This module will provide an overview of the concept of citizenship and citizenship education and its aims and approaches. It will also engage the learners in understanding the Concept of Global Citizenship and Global Citizenship Education required for responding to contemporary global challenges.
Module-II: Sustainability
In this module the student teachers will be provided an overview of the concept of Sustainability in all fields of human activities. The learners will reflect on the SDGs given by the United Nations. The concept of Sustainable management of natural resources can be explained by organizing School- and community-based activities.
Module- III: Environmental Education
In this module discussion and reflection can be held on the various environmental issues and what approaches and initiatives are being taken to address them. The module also throws light on the role of Mass Media and Technology in delivering environmental education and Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations in promoting Environmental Education issues.
