Course Description: The course seeks to develop an understanding of Art with special reference to its relevance in human life in general and education in particular. The course will enhance creative expression which is essential for all round development of students and especially school teachers. The focus of this course will be on visual and performing arts, from the perspective of school education. The course will revolve around the relationship between art and education; the theoretical considerations for art education and pedagogical aspects of art education.

Course Objectives:

  • Develop art appreciation with special reference to relevance and place of Art in human life
  • Understand key ideas of Art Education
  • Appreciate the pedagogical aspects of Art Education performing and visual
  • Reflect on the problems and issues in Art Education

Course Outcomes:

  • Art appreciation with special reference to relevance and place of Art in human life
  • Critically analyse art education practices in school
  • Basic skills and understanding for integrating art in education

Brief description of the modules:

Unit 1: Art and Education (Performing and Visual)

  • Significance of art education with special reference to the place of art in Human life.
  • Art education in school curriculum at different stages.
  • Art education across the curriculum.
  • Critical analysis of art education practices.

Unit 2: Theoretical Considerations in Art Education

  • Philosophical, psychological and sociological perspective on Art Education.
  • Perspectives on art in life.
  • Conceptual clarity of the following basic concepts of art at school level: aesthetics, criticism and judgement at school level, beauty, reality, idea, truth, taste, sense

Unit 3: Pedagogical Aspects of Art Education

  • Approaches the teaching-learning process of Art Education.
  • Curriculum of art education with special challenges of developing curriculum.
  • Material production and its challenges.
  • Assessment and Evaluation strategies with special reference to challenges.
  • Criterion of analyzing: curriculum of Art Education, teaching-learning material. assessment and evaluation strategies, teaching strategies of art at school level.
  • Values in Art teaching

Assessment Plan

  •  
  • Short assessment at the end/during each of the modules (30%x 2).
  • End semester exam covering all modules (40%).
