Course Description:

The course aims to introduce the beginning students of education to the concept of and select different perspectives on curriculum that are founded on varying imaginations of society. The course will begin by engaging students in reflecting on the key curricular question: What should be taught and for what purposes? This would facilitate a discussion on various factors influencing curriculum design, the different models for curriculum planning and development and planning, and the assumptions about knowledge, teaching and learning that underlie these designs and models

Course Objectives:

  • To develop an understanding of the idea/concepts of curriculum.
  • To familiarise students with different perspectives on/theories of curriculum development.
  • To familiarise students with key concepts related to curriculum planning and development.
  • To reflect on the role of teachers in curriculum development and implementation.

  • Identify and distinguish between different perspectives on/theories of curriculum development

Brief description of the modules:

Module 1: Education and Curriculum

This module will familiarise the students with the different ideas/meanings of curriculum, and the relationship between curriculum, aims of education and vision of society underlying these.

Module 2: Developing the Curriculum

The module will focus on the principles and models of curriculum planning and development, and various influences on curriculum planning. These discussions will facilitate in familiarising the students with different perspectives on curriculum and the underlying assumptions about knowledge, teaching and learning.

Module 3: Approaches, Planning, and Implementation

This module will focus on the implementation of curriculum and the role of teachers in curriculum development, planning and implementation.
