Course Description:
The course introduces students with sociological perspective to understand the interrelationship between education and society. It attempts to locate education within the larger theoretical perspectives of sociology to elaborate the basic concepts such as socialisation, education and family. It will discuss various agencies of socialisation such as school, family, peers and community
Course Objectives:
- To provide conceptual understanding of the basic concepts such as education, society, socialisation and interrelationship between education and society from the theoretical perspectives of sociology
- To provide conceptual clarity on the linkages between different agencies of socialisation such as school, family, peers and community
- To provide conceptual clarity on social change and education as an agency of social change and modernisation
- To provide an in-depth understanding of constitutional values, provisions and laws put in place to safeguard the basic rights of children and provide them with access to education
- To provide a brief perspective on various educational reforms and policies crucial for social equality in Independent India
Course Outcomes:
- Explain the basic concepts such as education, society, socialisation and relationship between education and society using theoretical perspectives from discipline of sociology.
- Establish the linkage between education and different agencies of socialisation
- Elaborate and discuss concept of social change and role of education in bringing social change and modernisation
- Critically examine and explain constitutional values, provisions and basic rights of the children to make the classroom teaching-learning process inclusive and enriching
- Trace the inter-relationship between various education polices and reforms and social movement that have played a crucial role in attaining social equality in Independent India
Brief description of the modules:
Module 1: Education and Society
The module focuses on understanding the relationship between education and society using theoretical perspectives from sociology of education. It also discusses terms such as society, social behaviour, status, institution, ideology, system, sub-system, socialization, social system, social values and norms, conflict, modernization.
Module 2: Education and Social Change
The module introduces students with the conceptual understanding of social change, relationship between social change and education. The module also discusses in detail the role of education in modernisation and social change.
Module 3: Education, Culture and Socialization
This module focuses on understanding the relationship between education and culture, role of education as agency for socialization. The modules discusses in detail manner various factors and policies that influence culture and educational process with a particular focus on social welfare, social reform movement, constitutional laws and acts for provision of education and achieving social equity.
