Aim: This course is a dialogue on the modalities of planning, regulation and zoning of heritage properties in an urban context and the desirability of legislation for the protection of undocumented heritage.
Course Outcome: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the components of planning and urbanization and how it impacts heritage components in the contemporary world.
- Appreciate need for legislation for protection of heritage property.
- Understand the concept of redevelopment and revitalization of heritage property through selected case studies.
- The policies initiated by the government of India towards planning and regulation for heritage properties in urban areas.
Module I: The City in history
An introduction into the characteristics of planning (nagar-vidhana) delineated in the classical Sanskrit texts on planning. And the transliteration of these concepts into cities of India from the earliest times to the twentieth century.
Case Studies: Dholavira, Shahjahanabad, New Delhi
Module II: Urbanization and its impact on heritage cities
This module will deal with the impact of urbanization on the heritage city and the government policies introduced to deal with under the area improvement Policies as HRIDAY and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). The idea will studied through the case study of Varanasi Heritage Corridor.
Module III: Zones as a concept in planning
Under this module, the concept of heritage zones will be located within the urban city planning process, and understanding sought to be achieved through the study of the Master Plans of Delhi, with a case study of the Lutyens Bungalow Zone (LBZ).
Module IV: Urbanisation and Undocumented Heritage and Urban Villages
With urbanization spreading rapidly, the undocumented heritage is under stress of appropriation, modification and disappearance. The concerns of heritage management have to deal increasingly with the threats of heritage which have slipped under the cracks and are vanishing from the cultural landscape. This module is a study to take this concern forward. And through case study of an Urban Village in Delhi, Haus Khas/Mohammedpur.
