Course description/Objective: This course would require the scholar to engage in guided research on a topic pertinent to her/his area of interest. The main objective of this course is to train the scholar in framing research questions and conducting research on her own research topic. The role of the faculty is visualized here as a guide who acquaints the scholar with various underpinnings of her topic. The theoretical, philosophical and socio-historical aspects of the topic will be discussed and thereafter, the scholar will be expected to look for readings/texts which engage with these aspects. The scholar will finally prepare the reading list and course design in close consultation with the course coordinator within a month of the beginning of Semester II.
Course Outcomes:
On the successful completion of the course it is envisaged that the research scholar will be able to develop a broad reading list which will facilitate the process of her research.
- The scholar will develop skills related to reading and writing, as the assessment pattern of the course demands that the scholar must engage deeply with a set of readings and write short write-ups based on the same.
- Will develop a comprehensive bibliography by identifying the important research conducted in the concerned area
- Will get more acquainted with her research area
- The course will aid the researcher in focussing on her research question in a more comprehensive manner, and will help her in developing multiple perspectives of viewing it

- Will be decided by specific course coordinators in close consultation with the concerned PhD scholar.
- Tentative Assessment schedule with details of weightage:
- The assessment will largely take into account the work-in-progress assignments and reports of the researcher presented at regular intervals during the course. A comprehensive research paper will have to be submitted at the end of the semester. The paper must demonstrate ample theoretical or philosophical grasp of the fundamental questions raised during the scholar’s interaction with the concerned faculty member. This paper may be presented to the English faculty. The course coordinator may device other assessment situations as s/he may deem fit for the researcher to cover rest of the assessment.
