Brief description of modules/ Main modules:
This course is comprised of two components, Dissertation and Internship.
The Dissertation is an opportunity for students to pursue a topic of their interest in some depth and to identify a mode of presentation under the guidance of, and in agreement with, a supervisor. This component is characterised by a period of independent study and rigorous self-directed research, experimentation and reflection. Students are encouraged to use the knowledge and understanding gained in other parts of the programme. The actual body of research carried out for the project must, however, go well beyond the material covered in other courses. This component will provide opportunities for experimentation with ideas and forms that promote autonomy over the research process. Critical and contextual framing of research will be required in the realisation of ideas, which can take a variety of forms (eg. choreographic work, moving image installation, scholarly writing, portfolio of performances, etc), as appropriate to the area of interest. Outcomes could be practice based or wholly written with a maximum weighting of 80%. Besides any choreographic/ performance work that students may produce, they will also hand in a research document and process document.
Internships at the end of the programme will be initiated by the students themselves and planned and carried out with partners and institutions across India and other parts of the world. Internships based in India will be planned with practitioners and institutions such as Spaces (Chennai), Padmini Chettur (Chennai), Attakkalari (Bangalore), Dance Dialogues (Mumbai), Adishakti (Pondicherry), Nachom Arts of Contemporary Movement (Manipur), Kha Foundation (Bangalore), Creative Movement Therapy Association of India (Bangalore), Gati Dance Forum (Delhi), Art Think South Asia (Delhi). International Internships in countries such as Australia, Germany, Japan, Switzerland and the UK will be through partnerships with Critical Path, Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan, Japan Foundation, Pro Helvetia and Independent Dance.
