- All UG pass out students joining the MVoc Tourism & Hospitality Management programme with a basic degree specialised on Tourism & Hospitality. Students with UG degree and having work experience in the Tourism & Hospitality in specialised areas such as- F&B Services, MICE, Tour Manager and Catering Manager can also join in this course. Also aspirants with NSQF Level-7 certification will be eligible to join this course with UG Degree.

How does the course link with the vision of AUD? The Tourism and Hospitality industry is hugely contributing towards employment and it is a vital segment to create jobs amongst the poorest segments of the population and act as a gateway for formal sector employment. The course is pitched to give a basic understanding on the developmental significance of the society in the context of growth and development of the tourism and hospitality industries. Therefore, it will focus on the larger interest of different societal groups, including the marginalised sections, and identify their roles in contributing tourism and hospitality industries.
How does the course link with the specific programme(s) where it is being offered? Since the course is a core foundation course of the MVoc programme, it will set a tone to find out importance of tourism and hospitality in a societal context. It is an introductory course intended to develop perspective role of tourism and hospitality as social phenomenon and primarily linked with the socio-economic development of a state/country.
Course Details:
Summary: For developing perception on tourism and hospitality in the context of societal development, the course makes an attempt to trace the history of tourism and hospitality as perceived through the industry. This also leads to theorising the hospitality and tourism to identify its importance in a socio- cultural developmental process. The course further critically examines the social embeddedness of contemporary hospitality and tourism in India and across globes. Through this course, an attempt is made to develop the tourism and hospitality experiences as authentic, embedded with ethical values and morale based on certain linkages with one’s culture, so that positive value addition is made to the industry. The course is also focusses on making the tourism and hospitality experiences as inclusive such as- respect for gender, religion etc. and thereby removing the gaps that exists in the context of participation in the tourism and hospitality industry by the population.
Objectives:The objectives of the course are:-
- Critically analyse tourism and hospitality as social phenomena and identify their roles in the societal development;
- Examine therange of academic issues, the multidisciplinary perspectives on hospitality and tourism as an industry for generating employment opportunities to the population in societal context;
- Analyse different theoretical frameworks exploring tourism and hospitality’s social roles in socio-economic development; and
- Critically evaluate the social embeddedness of contemporary hospitality and tourism in India and across globes.
- Expected learning outcomes: After going through this course, the students will be able to:-
- Identify and list the role of hospitality and tourism as a social phenomenon;
- Interpret the role of hospitality and tourism in contemporary society for socio-economic development;
- Synthesise the socially embedded nature of hospitality and tourism as industryfor business development; and
- Evaluate role of hospitality and tourism as an entrepreneurial activity within an appropriate theoretical framework.
Overall structure:
Module-1: Understanding Hospitality & Tourism in societal context. At the outset, the module gives a perspective on historical development of hospitality and tourism sectors by tracing hospitality & tourism during different eras. This module also reflects upon different social perception of hospitality and tourism as a as process of recreation, relaxation and opportunity for enhancing social status, developing interconnectedness between social groups and bridging cultural differences that exists.
Module-2: Theorising Hospitality from developmental perspective. The module examines hospitality and tourism as a frame of social science than a mere managerial science. It also focuses hospitality as a social control positively linked with socio-economic exchange and looking at the sector as metaphor and thereby theorising the process.
Module-3: Authenticity, moral and ethics in Tourism & Hospitality. The module deals with the conceptualising tourism and hospitality as an authentic experience and contextualising them in global era for developing positive culture and through effective marketing. The module also gives an overview on issues related to unethical practices in T&H sector, ethical connectedness with tourist, services, products and marketing system and ethical choices and practices in hospitality sector.
Module-4: Social inclusion in Tourism & Hospitality. This module focusses on the issues of accessibility in T&H sector for differently-abled people, its sustainability to meet the developmental goals, draw agenda for inclusive tourism & hospitality by widening participative decision making, promoting mutual understanding & respects and transforming the system. The module also attempts to deliberate on issues related to meeting religious needs of tourists, organising religious & pilgrimage tour, cultural tourism, peace tourism & its linkages with hospitality. The module ends up with discussion on gender issues in T&H sector, its challenges, mainstreaming of gender in T&H industries and building awareness on human right. There will be a project work based on field data consisting of 20% weightage.
Pedagogy: Instructional strategies:
- Lecture method will be used where the main theories and critical perspectives on hospitality and tourism and their roles in society will be presented and discussed.
- Organising tutorials in which different hospitality and tourism lenses will be debated.
- Organising workshop session for students in which they will actively interact with one another and discuss and debate the pertinent issues surrounding tourism,hospitalityandsociety.
- Undertaking individual/group research projects as part of assessment.
- Self-managed learning on reference materials
- Self-reflection on the main issues covered during the module and their implications.
