How the way we know the city, shapes it? City conceptualization & street food in Colombo and Delhi

Varying city conceptualizations dictate, shape, and result in creating cities as well as practices of its dwellers. This presentation will juxtapose the planning exercises in Colombo and Delhi with their street food practices. The empirics theoretically engage with the global north-south dichotomy and argues towards a Southern Theory without a North.
Nipesh Palat Narayanan is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Sociology, University of Colombo. His work focuses on knowledge hegemonies, which he enquires using informal practices and food preferences. His current project, titled – ‘Formal-Informal dichotomies of South Asian cities: Juxtaposing World-class Delhi and the Colombo Megapolis’, investigates urban knowledge flows and city conceptualizations. His work is situated within the larger domain of southern theory, and he intends to build a multidisciplinary lexicon by engaging with urban Asia.
