Course Description: This course introduces the student teachers to study the basic mathematical and quantitative reasoning for their practical usage. This course is designed to provide student teachers with the knowledge and capacities required to analyze, interpret, and communicate quantitative data. Student teachers will learn to think critically about data and use quantitative reasoning to solve real-life problems. It also aims to familiarise students with large scale educational database and use of relevant technology.

Course Objectives:

  • Adapt mathematical reasoning to solve problems in the real world
  • Analyze and interpret quantitative data & deduce the correct insights and conclusions from numerical representations like formulas, graphs, or tables
  • Familiarise with various large-scale surveys and database at the domain of education and basic Excel

Course Outcomes:

  • Adapt mathematical reasoning to solve problems in the real world and explain some fundamental ideas and tenets in this field
  • Analyze and interpret quantitative data
  • Interpret & deduce the right conclusions from numerical representations like formulas, graphs, or tables
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills using mathematical and quantitative reasoning methods,
  • Evaluate operational matrix
  • Analyze educational data and create educational model & use them in decision making
  • Analyze and evaluate mathematical and quantitative reasoning problems and solutions.

Brief description of the modules:

Module I:  Introduction to mathematical and quantitative reasoning

The course will begin with the brief discussions on meaning, nature and scope of mathematical and quantitative reasoning in various fields. What are the fundamental concepts around mathematization and how various types of mathematical and quantitative reasoning could be used in various domain of social science in general and education in particular.

Module II:   Introduction to data in Education

The second unit would familiarise students with various sources of data in the area of education (UDISE, UDISE Plus, NSS, NFHS, Census). The definitions, concepts and calculation on various indicators on education; namely – gross enrolment ratios (GER), net enrolment ratios (NER), educational progression: dropout rate, transition rate etc. will also be introduced. The unit concludes with introducing of basics of Excel/spreadsheet.

Module III: Data Analysis & Interpretation

This unit discusses descriptive statistics viz. types of variables, frequency distribution, and graphical representation of data, measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion. Students will gain hands on experience in analysing and visually representating data by using Excel and   interpreting the same.
