Students applying to the MA programme in Visual Art are not necessarily expected to have done any course in art making. However, they should have a reasonable exposure to the historical and formal elements of art practice, keen interest in the critical analysis of art and an involvement in thinking critically about contemporary art practice. The students are expected to carry a portfolio of their previous work to the interview.
The Visual Art programme is a practice based programme designed to enable the student to develop an engaged and critical art practice. It aims to expand the horizon of art and enable students to partake in new modes of artistic production. It will help students acquire adequate and demonstrable knowledge in all aspects of art-making: practical, historical, and theoretical and to develop capabilities which enable them to engage with more participatory modes of art production. The programme also enables them to develop analytical and critical thinking regarding the production, dissemination, reception, and consumption of the work of art. The programme is transacted through a combination of workshops, seminars, lectures and studio hours.
The programme envisages producing socially and politically engaged as well as ethically aware and critical practice and an ethos of emancipatory politics. The program’s decision to admit students from various fields also opens up interdisciplinary and collaborative possibilities and dialogue which the School is keen on fostering. The program aims to produce thinking and sensitive practitioners and scholars who are committed to ethical integrity, humanitarian values and social justice.
It is a two year program with two semesters each year. A semester is of sixteen weeks duration. The students should register for a minimum 16 credits each semester and need to earn 64 credits to complete the Programme. A course meeting for a minimum of four credit hours a week for the duration of a semester enables students to earn four credits. They may register for more credits on payment of extra fees. All the students of SCCE need to take 3 common Foundational courses, 1 each in the first three semesters, for 12 credits in total. They should also take four Elective Courses offered by the School or any other School in the University, one each in all the four semesters, for 16 credits in total. They need to take seven compulsory Core Courses from their respective discipline (in this case Visual Art) for 28 credits in total. Their MA dissertation work and display of art work in the final semester will earn them eight credits.

Upon successful completion of the Programme students will be able to:
- Interrogate the horizon of art and thereby imagine, develop and successfully execute emergent modes of cultural and artistic production.
- Develop demonstrable analytical and critical thinking regarding the production, dissemination, reception, and consumption of work of art.
- Gain demonstrable knowledge in all aspects of art-making: conceptual, practical, logistical, historical, and theoretical.
- Develop applicable capabilities to engage with more participatory modes of art production.
- Develop an emergent yet demonstrable understanding and sensibility regarding art through the sensitive integration of theory and practice and to encourage questioning of disciplinary boundaries.
- Interrogate the instrumental usage of technology in artistic production and develop a demonstrable ability in terms of creative and critical sensibility towards the interdependence of art and technology.
Is the Visual Art programme a practice based one?
Yes, it is primarily a practice based programme of two years duration. However the programme combines both creative practice (workshop model) and analytical courses. Students are expected to demonstrate the development of their art practice through a series of displays of creative work as well as critical reflections on their work and final dissertation writing. There is an emphasis on developing critical and analytical skills in art making as well as in reflection on one’s own art practice..
What are the career paths which emerge after doing an M.A. Visual Art?
Graduates may become professional artists working for galleries/museums or they may carve out alternative spaces for disseminating their practice within communities, through collaborations or independent ventures. They may pursue further research in art or work as curators at art museums, galleries archive. They may also find work as illustrators or as teachers of art.
How should I apply for the programme ?
Online applications open usually between April to June each year. Please check the university website regularly around this time of the year. There is an entrance test and an interview.
What should I get along for my interview?
You will need your admissions documents and a portfolio of representative samples of your creative work. You can carry your original artwork as well as image/sound/video files in a pen drive .
How do I prepare for my entrance test?
The entrance test will focus on examining the applicant’s analytical skills in terms of critical appreciation of works of art and historical knowledge regarding artistic practices. An awareness of various contemporary artistic forms and movements will help the students to face the entrance test.
