The MA Psychology (Psychosocial Clinical Studies) is an innovative programme carrying 70 credits across 4 semesters over 2 years. This programme attempts to inculcate in students a capacity for clinical and critical thinking that will facilitate a nuanced sensitivity to diverse states of emotional experience, a regard for the margins of 'Indian' society and a capacity to theorise the same. It may be thought of as a first attempt in India to redefine and provide a new direction to the disciplinary orientation of Psychology. We expect our students to engage effectively in academic and research fields. In addition, our focus on clinical thinking and related processes will, we hope, enable students to effectively respond to and work in contexts such as counseling and psychotherapy, which require engagement with the nuances of feeling states and the richness of human subjectivity.
TEACHING METHODOLOGY
The Programme uses many innovative teaching methods and styles in addition to lectures, such as seminars, workshops, film analyses, case studies, clinical vignettes and role playing. An attempt is made to make the classroom experience immersive, reflective, and reflexive. Fieldwork is also a component of some of the courses.
DISSERTATION
The research in Psychology is aimed at contributing towards knowledge generation in the field, gaining clinical experience, using a critical lens to interrogate relevance of existing Psychological theories, as well as delving into one’s own subjectivity as an epistemological tool. As part of fulfilling their requirements towards completion of the Masters programme, students in their final year will be required to draft a research proposal and complete a dissertation on an appropriate topic in consultation with their assigned faculty supervisors.
INTERNSHIP
After the second semester and during the summer break, an intensive fieldwork is initiated for a period of 30 days. Students are assisted in placement in various institutions such as hospitals and NGOs engaged in work on mental health, work with trauma, work with people affected by violence and process of restoration and rehabilitation. The purpose of this internship is to expose students to diverse settings which would help them acquire clinical and other skills. Additionally, students can make visits to places where indigenous processes of healing happen and document their observations and interviews. Regular supervision is provided to the students during the course of the internship. At the end of the internship, students are required to submit a detailed report based on their experiences.
