The programme is an integral part of the inter-disciplinary, intersectional and dynamic vision of AUD, which conceives of academic learning as providing students with a critical conceptual framework in its engagement with social realities and issues.
Consistent with this ideal, the MA Programme is envisaged as a thoroughly interdisciplinary one, drawing upon gendered analyses primarily from the social sciences and the humanities.
TEACHING METHODOLOGY
The pedagogies of teaching and learning employed at Gender Studies are intended to inculcate a feminist sensibility in our students, in ways that balance academic rigour with intellectual freedom. We encourage students to experience the personal as political by bringing into the classroom spaces critical reflection on their own and others’ life histories and activism in conjunction with feminist texts and theorisation, while offering multiple sites of assessment.
CREDIT SYSTEM
The MA in Gender Studies is a 64 credits programme. The School of Human Studies offers Foundation courses which are shared by the other Masters Programmes. There are courses that deal with conceptual ideas that structure the Gender Studies discipline, courses on political movements that have a dynamic relationship with feminist theory as well as courses that train students to handle research within a feminist perspective. Elective options built on faculty specialisations offer to students a wide range of choices that help consolidate their research interests and to encourage students to take up specialisations both amenable to employability and furthering key research agendas of the field. The students also have the freedom of being able to choose Electives across the different Schools and Programmes of the university, which adds to the depth of varied perspectives that they bring to the Gender Studies courses.
INTERNSHIP
Feminist politics is sceptical of the dichotomy between practice and theory. The Gender Studies programme at AUD tries to bridge this gap between knowing and doing by encouraging students to undertake an internship that would also familiarize them with the world of work. Internship enables students to work with an organisation, and ensures that even while studying, the student is able to make links with the outside world in terms of experience and creating opportunities for future collaborations.
DISSERTATION
The dissertation in the final semester of the MA is an opportunity to contribute to knowledge production in the field of Gender Studies. It is also an opportunity to interpret and challenge existing knowledge systems from a gender-sensitive lens. The research thus conducted is also expected to help students in identifying the potential areas of research and work to be taken up after the completion of the Programme.
