The course pursues a few questions like the following:
- How do disparate images put together constitute narration?
- Is cinema basically constituted by time?
- Why do people think slow moving films are boring?
- How to develop a category of film images based on temporal composition?
- How do film images signify?
- How does normal human perception relate to cinematic perception?
- How do we understand space as an expression of time?
- Do film narratives implicitly presuppose philosophical positions?
The list is long but the semester is short. The questions, like seeds, are supposed to grow in us.
The course will use two books of Henri Bergson “Matter and Memory” and “Creative Evolution”; two books of Gilles Deleuze, “Cinema I: Movement Images” and “Cinema 2: Time Images” and some introductory reading on Peircian classification of signs.
- You may elect this course if your answer is affirmative to the following questions:
- You don’t have any proven allergy to philosophical thought.
- You are really curious about the enigma of cinema.
- You will be able to attend classes regularly all through the semester.
- You are willing to become active participant in discussions in the class.
- You have a spirit of adventure.
- If you think education is all about learning to think.
- You can devote good time to read apparently difficult texts without wanting to understand them right away.
- You are not content with simple questions and simpler answers.
- If you like Tarkovsky a lot.
- If you want to know how Mani Kaul films can be enjoyed.
There will be two in semester assignments and an end term take home exam (20%,20%,40%).Class participation will carry 20%. The assignments and assessment will only try to gauge the effort made to think through the questions with the help of lectures and readings.
The first class will take place on 16th January afternoon, most probably CR 10 (consult time table).
