Aim: This course aims to enhance students’ ability to read and respond to specialized (subject/discipline-based) materials in English in written and oral form. The students will be given practice in academic writing in different genres. They will also gain greater proficiency in speaking and listening on higher level skills such as academic discussions, debates, and paper presentations.
Course Outcomes:
- Demonstrate ideas and opinions on a variety of topics through written and oral texts
- Use written and oral skills to develop an academic argument
- Demonstrate an awareness of critical skills for reading a range of academic texts
- Apply research skills to explore different topics
- Use citation style to refer to source materials for projects, class presentations and assessment tasks
Brief description of modules/ Main modules:
This course enhances the ability to read and respond to specialized (subject/discipline-based) materials in English in written and oral form. Students will be given practice in academic writing in different genres. They will also gain greater proficiency in speaking and listening on higher level skills such as academic discussions, debates, and paper presentations. These tasks and activities also help develop metacognitive skills such as critical thinking, interpretation and synthesis of information and ideas. Students will be expected to demonstrate basic study and referencing skills which involves accessing the internet, using the library, familiarity with basic APA style-sheet, awareness of plagiarism and ethical conventions in academic discourse.

Reading List:
Material for this course will be drawn from a range of language teaching resources-both print and online- which will allow students to improve their academic language skills. Handouts covering different aspects of academic English skills and activities such as project work, presentations, group discussions, writing portfolios, reflections, etc. will allow students to actively engage in language learning.
