Course Description:
This pedagogical course in Economics is intended to enhance the pedagogical content knowledge of student teachers through different learning approaches and methods. This course comprises three units and a practicum. The course is devoted to developing an understanding of the nature and scope of Social Science and Economics. It focuses on the aims and objectives of teaching Economics and its linkages with other Inter/Multi/Trans-disciplines. It also discusses the different approaches and strategies related to economics teaching at secondary level.
Course Objectives:
- To understand the meaning and importance of Social Science (in general) and Economics (in specific) and its importance in daily life and practice.
- Develop teaching competencies and ability to use different approaches and strategies related to economics teaching at secondary level.
- Develop an understanding for diversity, differences, human rights, economic justice, and an appreciation for values with the constitutional imperatives.
Course Outcomes: After completion of this course, student teacher will be able to:
- Explain the nature and scope of Social Sciences in general and Economics in particular
- Examine the pedagogical aspects of the subject of economics
- Elaborate the aims and objectives of the Social Sciences in the axis of economics
- Analyse the historical perspective and inherent values in economics
- Identify the importance/significance of economics in daily life
- Develop learning objectives and outcomes in tune with graduate attributes
- Differentiate between Economics and other areas of social sciences
- Determine the suitability of the methods for teaching learning economics
- Apply approaches and strategies of teaching learning economics at the secondary stage.
Brief description of the modules:
Module-I: Nature, Scope, and Historical Perspective of Economics
This module will explore the subject of Social Science and Economics. It will engage and explore the nature, concept and historical perspective of economics in following ways-
- Nature of Social Sciences and Economics.
- Historical development of Economics (ancient/modern/neo-classical)
- Economics & Economic reform in contemporary times (Need, Scope and significance)
- Economics as an disciplines and its inter-relationship with social science
- Trends and policies in poverty; inequality and unemployment.
- Recommendations and suggestions of various policies National and International (The Washington Consensus, NCF-2005, NEP-2020, NCF-2023)
Module-II: Aims and Objectives of Teaching Economics
This module will explore the aims and objectives of teaching economics and its importance in learning. It will engage the learner in finding linkages of economics with the other subjects of social science and help in building a strong value system in the individual. The entire module consist of the following issue based deliberations-
- Aims and objectives of teaching Economics at secondary stage.
- Learning outcomes and competencies of teaching Economics at secondary stage.
- Linkages of Economics with other subjects and its place in school curriculum.
- Values of Economics such as intellectual, utilitarian, moral & aesthetic and environmental.
Module-III: Pedagogical Aspects of Economics
This module will explore the pedagogical aspect of economics with focus on various approaches to teaching economics, and critical, creative and analytical pedagogical concerns in teaching Economics with special reference to higher-order thinking.
- Implication of various approaches- inductive deductive, constructivist, experiential learning, art-integrated learning, sports integrated learning, field visit, discovery, project methods for learning of the selected chapters/concepts in Economics textbooks.
- Moving towards more holistic, interdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary approaches of learning economics, learning exclusive of pre-conceptions and misconceptions, blended learning.
- Methods of teaching Economics: learner-centric and group-centric, activity based, discussion, problem-solving, role play, inquiry approach, problem- solving, concept mapping, collaborative & cooperative learning approach, field based experiential learning and applications of suitable methods for learning the selected chapters/concepts in economics textbooks.
- Critical, creative and analytical pedagogical concerns in teaching the Economics with special reference to higher-order thinking.
