Course Description:
This course is designed to equip student teachers with comprehensive knowledge and skills for teaching TWAU. The main aim of this course is to help student teachers become familiar with diverse pedagogical and assessment approaches to support learning of TWAU and engage with development of effective teaching learning materials/resources (TLMs). Student teachers will learn how to create classroom activities and assessment plans that can help develop amongst students at preparatory and primary stage, an understanding and appreciation for the interconnectedness and interdependence of human and natural world–integrating opportunities to participate in outdoor learning.
Course Objectives:
After completion of the course, student teachers will be able to:
- Equip students with knowledge and skills for teaching TWAU
- Familiarise the students with variety of teaching aids, modes of planning for lessons, and assessment and evaluation
Course Outcomes:
On completion of this course, student teachers will be able to:
- Describe the nature, role and importance of diverse and age-appropriate teaching-learning material in the teaching of TWAU
- Integrate various teaching-learning resources in teaching-learning of TWAU
- Design and curate age-appropriate teaching-learning aids for TWAU
- Design lesson plans for various content areas
- Create appropriate learning experiences
- Plan diverse assessment approaches
Brief description of the modules:
Module 1: Teaching-Learning Aids and Resources
This unit will focus on use of diverse teaching-learning materials and resources as pedagogical scaffolds in enabling development of children’s understanding of the world around us. Various types of learning resources, including environmental, print, and digital resources, and their effective integration into the taught curriculum. Student teachers will learn to identify, design, and manage resources such as reflective journals, charts, models, and integrating in their lesson plans use of audio-visual resources, outdoor learning experiences, as well as using simulations to teach young learners science concepts.
Module 2: Textbook Analysis and Planning for Teaching-Learning World Around Us
This unit focuses on understanding and analyzing different textbooks to effectively teach "World Around Us" topics like food, cloth, flowers, rivers, and forests from a Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) perspective. It involves selecting appropriate content, identifying key facts, concepts, and generalizations. The unit also covers planning and organizing learning strategies, integrating ICT, art, games, toys, and sports.
Module 3: Assessment and Evaluation
This unit explores assessment approaches for the subject. It covers strategies for continuous assessment, including school-based, formative, and summative assessments, and introduces formal, informal, and 360-degree–multi-source feedback based -self, peer and teachers’ assessments. The unit delves into assessment approaches and techniques for group activities, field observations, portfolio management, skills, assignments, projects, and presentations.
