Objectives:
The course introduces and familiarizes the Heritage Tourism and Management concept, the role of agencies and organizations, and their impacts on society and the economy. It incorporates global and local perspectives in theorizing and managing heritage tourism and its components.
Heritage Tourism is an increasingly significant component of the global tourism industry. The concept of heritage continues to evolve with its fast-changing socio-cultural, political, and economic surroundings. Therefore, heritage tourism must engage with new forms of globalized organizations and agencies with increasing local communities and global society involvement. The course offers a thorough critical examination and evaluation of the unique dynamic of heritage and tourism development from heritage/social science and management perspectives.
The pedagogy and assessment are designed and structured so the student can submit continuous evaluations and assignments on the applicability of the modules/resource/ idea of their choice and case studies based on the course's learning outcomes.
Learning Outcomes:
· Analyze and explain the concept and various components of Heritage Tourism.
· Understand Tourism organizations and their role in tourism management
· Understand laws and regulations to safeguard heritage components and consumer rights.
· Evaluate the gathered data and interpret it using various models and paradigms of heritage tourism.
· Create awareness about heritage tourism among the local communities with case studies.
· Plan to provide tourist information and itineraries with destination data regarding local heritage and culture.
Modules:
Module I: Organization of Tourism: Focus on the case study of national and international organizations like WTO, IATA, PATA, TAAI, IATO, etc. The students will familiarize themselves with such organizations' strategy, mission, and objectives and their role in managing Heritage Tourism.
Module II: Travel Agencies and Tour Operations: The students will familiarize themselves with tourism planning, the services provided by private and public sectors, the preparation and procedures of itineraries, and the tourism product life cycle in the context of various facets of heritage.
Module III: International Conventions and National Laws: The focus will be on Tourism bill rights, Tourism Codes, National Laws and Regulations, and Consumer Protection Laws and Rights. The case study of the laws and policies of the Government of India and the Government of Delhi is essential.
Module IV: Geography of Heritage Tourism: The module here seeks to look into the geography of heritage tourism, focusing on understanding India's various natural and climatic regions and the world, particularly in areas/countries striving to diversify away from sea, sand, mountains, sun, etc.
Module V: Impacts of Heritage Tourism: The module will look into Heritage Tourism and its growth and impact. Tourism growth and its consequences have profoundly influenced the presentation and representation of tangible and intangible heritage within the tourism context. With increasing tourist footfall, global and local communities assimilated with each other yet strived to sustain their specific locality and identity. The focus is on socio-cultural, economic, and environmental impacts and sustainable and responsible tourism.
