Course Coordinator and Team: Dr. Richa Awasthy&Dr. Nidhi

Email of course coordinator: richa[at]aud[dot]ac[dot]in&nidhi[at]aud[dot]ac[dot]in

Pre-requisites:

Course Objectives/Description:

The course is designed to achieve an understanding and working knowledge of the role of qualitative and quantitative methodology in management research. It involves an understanding of the relationship between theory, methodology, and methods in qualitative, quantitative and mixed method research. At the end of the course, the student should appreciate the various methods and techniques and be well-trained to think logically and scientifically in an inter-disciplinary framework.

Course Outcomes:

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. To understand the role of qualitative and quantitative methods in management and organizational research.
  2. To acquaint with the relationship between theory, methodology, and methods in management research.
  3. To develop a working knowledge of a range of qualitative and quantitative methodologies and methods.
  4. To organise and conduct research in an appropriate manner
  5. To fluently and appropriate use statistical softwares for data entry, processing, organising, and analysis
  6. To write a research report

phenomenology; narrative; ethnography; auto-ethnography; quasi-ethnography; grounded theory; case study; action research; life history method; documentary method

Unit 3: Observation and Interviews

Observations – concept of observation; participatory and non-participatory methods; structured and unstructured methods; unobtrusive observation, behavior trace study

Interview – concept and types of interview, informal, unstructured, semi-structured, structured; using electronic media; focus group interviews; projective techniques - word association, incomplete sentence

Unit 4: Qualitative Data Analysis Process

Inductive, deductive and abductive analysis; learning through reflection, learning through content and context: content analysis; discourse analysis; software for qualitative data analysis; issues of reliability and validity in qualitative research; ethical issues and reflexivity in qualitative research

Unit 5: The Nature of Quantitative Research, Measurement and Scaling

The quantitative research methodology; concepts, variables, measurement; measurement scales; the characteristics of good measurement; selecting a measurement scale; rating and ranking scales

Unit 6: Information Base and Data Collection

Meaning and types of data - secondary and primary; sources and collection of secondary data

Questionnaires – structure and unstructured design; questionnaire design process; identifying variables, framing questions, order of questions; pre-testing and administrating; evaluation of scales – accuracy, reliability, validity and generalisability; ethical issues in data collection

Experiments – concept of experimentation; conducting an experiment; validity in experimentation; experimental research designs

Unit 7: Sample Design and Sampling

Sampling: need and concept; probability sampling methods- simple random, stratified and cluster sampling; non-probability sampling methods - judgmental, convenience, quota and snowball sampling; accuracy and diversity issues in sampling; sampling distributions; point and interval estimation; sample size and sampling error

Unit 8: Processing and Analysis of Quantitative Data

Data preparation – editing, cleaning and coding of raw data, weighting, variable re-specification and scale transformation; missing data and outlier analysis; classification of data analysis techniques; selecting the appropriate data analysis strategy with examples

Unit 9: Hypothesis Testing and Statistical Inference

Basic concepts of hypothesis testing; errors in testing a hypothesis; selecting a hypothesis test - one sample test for mean and proportions based on z and t distributions; two sample statistical inferences about means (independent and matched samples) and proportions; inferences about one sample and two sample population variances; applications based on inferential statistics.
